Lighting

If you've ever read this blog you've noticed that I take a lot of pictures. This is pretty easy during the day because I have good lighting in my kitchen. But now that winter is approaching, lighting gets to be a little more problematic, especially at breakfast.

Here's an unretouched photo with my regular kitchen lighting, no flash. It skews way yellow and focus is an issue with the long exposure.

This is the straight-on flash. It's the Nikon SB-400 Speedlight, but it looks basically the same with the built-in flash. And not appetizing.

Fortunately the SB-400 can be oriented into bounce flash mode. Unfortunately, the ceiling my kitchen is high and sloped, so not quite enough light comes back down. I could use a little more light.

I added an extra slave strobe pointing up and that did the trick!

This is my setup:

This is sort of a compromise since I need to use the kitchen, and having an excessive number of lights and/or umbrellas gets unwieldy!
